Rivers running wild with mercury

A new study by Jon R. Hawkings and coworkers shows that meltwater from the Greenland Ice Sheet carry surprisingly high concentrations of dissolved mercury. The fluxes of dissolved mercury are estimated to be globally significant. This includes even marked export of bioaccumulating methylmercury. Results suggest a geological source of mercury at the ice sheet bed and not pollution. However, the source of methylmercury remains an open question. Read more here
